Nourishing Our Community with Culturally Appropriate Food

Individuals Served

Providing support to our West African local communities through thoughtful food distribution.

In Washington state, 1 out of every 10 residents experiences food insecurity, and consistent access to affordable, culturally appropriate foods can be particularly challenging for our West African community.

Through the generosity of partners, volunteers, and donors, Helping Hands has provided 3,500+ Greater Puget Sound community members (and counting) with nutritious meals and ingredients that are thoughtfully sourced to support our West African community members. Our mission goes beyond addressing hunger; it's about nourishing the soul of our communities.

With every meal, we strive to foster a sense of belonging and pride within our community - but our work has just begun. We need your help to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the food that meets their needs.

How Our Food Distribution Works:

  1. Food Collection - We partner with local farmers such as Farmer Frog, and suppliers like African Supermart, to gather fresh and culturally appropriate produce and dry goods.
  2. Sorting and Packaging - Our incredible volunteers help ensure the quality and suitability of food while packing it into easy-to-distribute packages.
  3. Distribution - We hold food distribution events monthly at the garage next to our Everett office. Visit our Facebook page to see the date of our next distribution!

Donate:

In addition to providing food from local African grocers through our food bank & distribution, our nutrition support voucher program offers 10 people each month a $300 voucher to shop at a local African grocery store, amounting to $36,000 in direct food assistance each year. Your recurring donation directly impacts our ability to provide these vouchers to those in need.

Volunteer:

We are constantly looking for local residents who can join us in picking up, sorting, packaging, and distributing food items for our food bank and distribution events, as well as transportation of food to those who are unable to travel to our headquarters in Everett, WA.
